Head lice are tiny parasites that live and proliferate on the scalp. Head lice typically cause itchy skin and are difficult to spot with the naked eye since they infest the base of the hair. When they reproduce, they lay white eggs that hatch. These eggs are more noticeable.

Head lice are contagious. Someone with head lice can transfer the parasite to others who share items like towels, pillows, or combs with them. Individuals can also transfer head lice through physical contact, especially in overcrowded spaces. Thus, avoid contact with infected individuals.

If head lice infest your scalp, wash your hair frequently with a nix shampoo. Nix shampoo contains one percent of permethrin, a chemical that kills live lice. Permethrin does not kill lice eggs. Instead, remove the eggs with a nit comb and apply permethrin lotion. Check your scalp and hair for lice every eight hours after treatment. Then, wash all towels, clothing, and bedding in hot water.

Consult with a dermatologist if head lice persist after treatment at home. Dermatologists can recommend treatments and prescription medications to eliminate them.
